For some years the neurological footplates have been used, often unknown to the people, clients and clinicians, providing them and the effects and the theory behind their use in treating neurological conditions that involve tone.

Currently, in the orthotic field the systems have been standardized for use with the Cascade DAFO AFO and insole systems, but little is understood about the outcomes and the effectiveness of these devices as a weight-bearing, tone reducing part of clients’ overall treatment. Custom versions of these footplates can be replicated specifically to clients needs

Original research papers were carried out in the late 1960s’s by teams in the UK regards the reflexes of the foot on children suffering with neurological conditions such as Cerebral Palsy. This research continued in the USA throughout the 80's and 90's.

With different reflex points a custom footplate can be specifically developed per client to give the best reflex response to control the opposing tonal changes following neurological presentation.

There are several ways that the foot orthotic or footplate can be made or incorporated into your orthoses, and a detailed assessment would select the best pathway for your tone reducing device.

Foot casting, impression moulds, preformed shells and 3D scanning can all be used to acquire the clinical and biomechanical data to achieve this.

Once the data is recorded, the specialist clinician must then model and incorporate the necessary modifications to initiate the required reflex response to reduce any increase in spasticity or tone.

The response to the use of these devices is varied and not a cure but comfort and stability can often be achieved.
